“Be afraid, be very afraid.”

These are the words of Niels Hofmans, a security researcher who found a security flaw that could be used to hack Macs.

The very statement poses serious questions about the immunity of Mac devices to hacking. This is based on the fact that there is a general assumption that Apple devices-macs, iPads, and iPhones- are immune to malware and hacking. This isn’t true.

That being said, it is imperative to understand that although macs are less likely to be targeted than PCs, you should take measures to ensure that you keep your Mac or any computer safe.

Here’s how to go about it.

Install anti-virus Software

Although Apple has included Xprotect -an antivirus software- on all macs, this is not foolproof sufficient. This is because XProtect lacks the ability to identify as many types of potential malware as third-party antivirus software. As such, there are gaps in its library of malicious programs which can leave you exposed.

Also, Malwarebytes suggests that there has been an increase in the number of serious malware attacks on Macs by 61% from 2019 to 2020. This suggests that installing antivirus software is imperative.

Use the Most Updated Version of Software

Software updates offer multiple benefits. They not only add new features but also help repair security holes.

One of the fundamental benefits of updating your software is that it helps patch security flaws. Oftentimes, hackers exploit security flaws by writing codes to target the vulnerability. As a result, the code-packaged in malware- allows them to steal data on your device, thus allowing them to gain control over your device.

Therefore, updating your software and operating systems helps keep hackers out.

Get an IT partner

While Apple strives to offer the best security features for your Mac, the designated tools they offer are not sufficient. However, working with an IT partner can ensure your device is protected.

An IT partner brings expertise. This helps in identifying security patches in certain areas where your antivirus software has failed. Also, they recommend ways to prevent your Mac from being hacked.
